Why Is My Ductless Air Conditioner Malfunctioning?

Ductless air conditioning systems provide you with flexibility, energy savings and customized comfort. These systems are reliable and just need an annual tune-up. Because a ductless air conditioner has many mechanical and electrical components, it’s possible for a malfunction to occur. Here are three of the most common types of ductless air conditioner problems and tips on what you can do about them.

Refrigerant Leak

A refrigerant leak in your ductless air conditioning system reduces its ability to cool your home. You may notice that there’s only a trickle of air blowing from the unit. The air may feel warm instead of cool. The system may also cycle more frequently as it tries to reach the temperature setting. Refrigerant leaks require professional attention by a certified technician.

No Power

When your ductless AC won’t cycle, make sure the indoor unit is plugged into a working outlet. If you’re trying to use the unit’s remote, make sure its batteries work. Next, check the circuit breaker. If the AC circuit has tripped, reset the breaker. If it immediately trips again or trips when the unit attempts to start, you’ll need repairs. If the unit is getting power but won’t turn on, check the thermostat and verify that it’s set to cool. According to the Department of Energy, sensor, control or thermostat problems could stop the unit from working.

Dirt Buildup

Dirt, dust or other debris accumulate on multiple parts of a ductless air conditioning system. When the unit is malfunctioning, check the air filter. Replace the air filter every two months or sooner if it’s dirty. Check the condensate line. If it’s obstructed, clean it with a brush and diluted bleach. The outdoor unit’s coils may be dirty. Wash its housing with your garden hose. A tune-up of your ductless air conditioner includes these actions.
